FINNISH URGIC MYTHOLOGY HAS IT THAT THE EVIL ONE COLLECTS SUNDAY NAIL
CLIPPINGS AND WITH THEM BUILDS THE BOAT THAT TRANSPORTS THE DEAD

The inspiration for this piece was a combination of an article on nail clippers by Nicholson Baker and the so-called "Culture Wars", the presumed battle that is raging for peoples' minds and spirits. It struck me that if there is a war there should be some kind of war medal. Hence, the layout of this piece. Surprisingly, logo nail clippers seem to capture many of the elements involved in the alleged culture war: Jesus, Texas, drugs, music, fish symbols, vanity, potty humor, and more. There are even "crime" clippers, the NYPD clippers seen below at 10X were advertised with the slogan "Don't scratch a perp". And then there's the fart lighting, spitting, thieving Korean cartoon figure MashiMaro whose clipper shows him in jail, also shown below. And of course, every culture war needs reefer, shown below with a built-in butane lighter. Perhaps all this is the result of finger nails and nail clippings being associated with death, Satan, zombies, Dracula, harlots, etc. Maybe that's why it's good to have a Jesus clipper to help sink Satan's boat (seen at 50X below). And a Texas one to.

The piece is 7 feet long and about 2 feet wide. It's mounted on the wall with very big spikes, the kind that might be used if there were modern day crucifixions. The photos were taken through a Nikon binocular microscope at enlargements from 10 to 70 times. Scroll down for a few close-up details.
